Graduate Student Health Insurance Plan (GSHIP)

[GSHIP FAQ] [Healthcare Links]

What GSHIP Is
Graduate Student Health Insurance (GSHIP) is mandatory for all graduate students who are not enrolled in comparable private health care. For teaching assistants, readers, and student researchers, the yearly GSHIP premium is paid for by your department or campus employer. This is automatic along with partial tuition reimbursement.

How It Works
GSHIP coverage includes services provided by the Campus Health Center (CHC) and those emergency services required outside of the CHC area. A membership card is mailed to the directly to the enrollee.

With the exception of emergency services, all treatments begin at the CHC. If a referral is required, it will be administered by the CHC and is valid for 90 days after the date of the referral.

GSA’s Role in GSHIP
GSHIP coverage is determined by the GSHIP Chair who works in collaboration with the Student Insurance Coordinator at the CHC, currently Carla Short, and with the GSHIP Committee, organized by the GSHIP Chair and made up of current graduate students. To volunteer for the GSHIP Committee, please contact the current GSHIP chair.

Copays
This year, 2005-6, the CHC has instituted a visit copay of $10 per visit. However, this copay has already been included in this year’s GSHIP premium. Therefore, graduate students enrolled in GSHIP do not have to pay a visit copay when visiting the CHC. The visit copay is still required for doctors outside of the CHC. It is also important to note that the prescription copay of $10 per prescription is still required at the CHC pharmacy.

Referrals
A referral is administered by the CHC and is valid for 90 days after the date of the referral. This enables the enrollee to obtain 100% coverage with a network doctor outside of the CHC.

Eye Care
Eye care is a contracted benefit through the CHC. This means that it is not paid for by the GSHIP. Instead, the CHC has reached an agreement with a local optometrist (O.D.) that allows students to obtain eye care services at a reduced rate.

Currently, the CHC is working with Dr. Gary Fishberg at Canyon Crest Towne Centre for eye care. Call (951) 788-2020 for an appointment. There is an $8.00 copay for an eye exam. Dr. Fishberg is also able to provide a full range of services including eye examinations, contact lens examinations, glasses and contacts. A list of the contracted pricing can be found towards the back of the 2005-6 GSHIP brochure. No referral is required to obtain eye care.

Dental Care
Dental care is a contracted benefit through the CHC. This means that it is not paid for by the GSHIP. Instead, the CHC has reached an agreement with a dentist who provides dental services at the CHC at a reduced rate.

An appointment can be made by calling the CHC at (951) 827-3039. Please note that a list of contracted pricing can be found towards the end of the 2005-6 GSHIP brochure. A separate dental copay will be required at the time of the visit.

GSHIP FAQ

Is there a required visit copay at the CampusHealthCenter (CHC)?

There is a required copay for those not enrolled in GSHIP. For those students who already participate in GSHIP, this copay has been included in your yearly premium and is therefore not due at the CHC.

How do I choose not to enroll in GSHIP?

You can choose not to be enrolled in GSHIP if you can prove that you have other health coverage that meets the University’s minimum requirements. Otherwise, GSHIP is required.

A waiver form is required in order to “opt out” of GSHIP coverage. This waiver can be found here and filled out online. You must fill out a waiver form before the quarter’s coverage begins. Waivers received after this point will not be eligible to opt out. Please contact Katy Webber for more information.

What does it mean to “opt out” of GSHIP?

“Opting out” of GSHIP means that you have sufficient outside health coverage to meet the University’s requirements and that you have successfully filled out the online waiver form before the quarterly deadline.

I thought that no copay was required at the CHC since I am enrolled in GSHIP. Why was I charged for a prescription?

There is no visit copay for GSHIP enrollees. However, you are still required to pay the $10.00 prescription copay at the CHC pharmacy or $15.00 at any other pharmacy.

Why was I charged a visit copay at my last doctor’s visit?

If the visit was to a physician outside of the CHC, the visit copay of $10.00 still applies. If this visit was at the CHC and you are enrolled in GSHIP, this was an error.
